Raw Linseed Oil – Traditional Wood Treatment
Raw Linseed Oil is a classic, slow-drying wood oil that penetrates deeply to feed and revive bare timber, enhancing grain and leaving a natural, low-sheen finish. Ideal where a traditional look and long open time are preferred—on interior joinery, tool handles, rustic furniture, and for reviving dry wood, terracotta and masonry.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Deep Penetration: Reconditions dry wood and highlights natural figure.
-
Natural Low Sheen: Non-plastic finish that’s easy to refresh.
-
Extended Working Time: Slow drying aids wet-in-wet application on thirsty timbers.
-
Multi-Surface Use: Suitable for interior wood; also revives terracotta, stone and porous masonry.
-
Versatile: Can be used to lightly protect steel tools from rust (wipe thin film).
Typical Uses
- Interior joinery, trim, window boards and furniture
- Tool handles, turned items and craft work
- Reviving dry wood, terracotta pots and porous stone
Surface Preparation
- Ensure surfaces are bare, clean and dry. Remove varnish/paint/wax; sand to P180–P240 and de-dust.
- Test on an off-cut to confirm colour and absorption.
Application
- Stir well. Apply a thin coat with a lint-free cloth or brush along the grain.
- Allow 20–30 minutes to penetrate, then wipe off all excess to prevent a sticky surface.
- Allow to dry (often 24+ hours per coat, longer in cool/humid conditions). Repeat 2–3 times on porous wood.
- De-nib lightly between coats for a smoother feel.
Aftercare & Maintenance
- Let the finish reach full cure before heavy use.
- Clean with a damp cloth; re-oil when the surface looks dull or dry.
Limitations & Safety
- Primarily for interior/sheltered use; not a high-build or fast-drying finish.
- May amber/darken pale timbers—always test first.
- Not recommended for food-contact surfaces unless specifically approved.
-
Oily rag safety: Oil-soaked cloths can self-heat—spread flat outdoors to dry or submerge in water before disposal.
Raw Linseed Oil offers a traditional, easy-to-maintain finish that nourishes and enhances timber while preserving a natural look and feel.
