How to Seal and Protect Your Driveway: A Step-by-Step UK Guide
Your driveway takes a beating: cars, foot traffic, rain, frost, moss, oil and sun. Over time stains soak in, colour fades and block paving joints loosen. Sealing is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect the surface and keep it looking right, and it is a job most homeowners can do themselves with good preparation.
At DIY Refurb we stock a full range of cleaners, repair products and sealers. This guide walks you through the job step by step and shows which product suits each stage, starting with our go-to Kingfisher sealers.
Why Seal Your Driveway?
- Moisture protection: Sealers stop water soaking in, reducing freeze–thaw damage.
- Stain resistance: Oil, rust and tyre marks sit on the surface and are easier to clean off.
- Fewer weeds and moss: Sealing helps stabilise block paving joints so growth struggles to take hold.
- Colour and UV protection: A good sealer can enhance and hold the colour of paving and concrete.
- Longer lifespan: Regular sealing can add years to your driveway’s usable life.
Choosing the Right Sealer
Our first choice: Kingfisher
For most block paving and concrete driveways we recommend the Kingfisher range:
- Kingfisher K-Seal Total Satin Sealer – an all-round sealer for block paving and concrete with a satin finish.
- Kingfisher Restore-A-Drive – for faded block paving that needs colour restoring as well as sealing.
- Kingfisher Ultimate Topcoat Premium Sealer – a premium solvent-based option for a harder-wearing finish.
Other sealers we stock
- Sika Stone Protector 5L, Sika Waterproofer & Protector 5L and Sika Water Sealer – water-repellent treatments for stone, concrete and masonry.
- Resiblock Superior Block Paving Sealer – a trade-favourite joint-stabilising sealer for block paving.
- Resiblock Indian Sandstone Sealer 5L – made for natural sandstone paving.
- TIMCO Path, Patio & Driveway Sealer 1L – handy for smaller areas, paths and patios.
Quick check: sprinkle water on the surface. If it soaks in and darkens quickly, the driveway is unsealed and will benefit from treatment. Always check the product label suits your surface type.
Tarmac/asphalt: these sealers are designed for paving, concrete and stone. Tarmac needs a dedicated tarmac restorer – check the label or ask us before using a paving sealer on tarmac.
Step 1: Clean and Prepare
Preparation matters as much as the sealer. A dirty or damp surface won’t bond properly and the finish can flake or peel.
- Sweep and wash: Clear debris, then pressure wash to lift ingrained dirt.
- Deep clean with Patio Wizard: Everbuild Patio Wizard is our go-to prep cleaner for paving and driveways before sealing – apply, leave to work as per the label, then rinse. For larger areas, Equip2clean Patio & Driveway Cleaner 5L is a good-value alternative.
- Treat black spots and algae: Use Proformula Black Spot Remover 5L on stubborn black spot lichen and algae so they don’t end up trapped under the seal.
- Let it dry: Allow at least 24–48 hours after washing, depending on the weather.
- Check the forecast: Aim for dry, mild conditions (around 12–25°C) with no rain due for 24 hours after application.
Step 2: Repair Joints and Cracks
- Paving joints: Re-point loose or empty joints with Sika FastFix All Weather Paving Jointing Compound, or use SikaCeram FlowFix for a pourable jointing option.
- Block paving sand: Make sure jointing sand is topped up, dry and compacted before sealing.
- Concrete defects: Fill small cracks and chips with Metolux Metoset Concrete Repair Resin (Grey) and allow it to cure fully.
Step 3: Apply the Sealer
Block paving and concrete (Kingfisher K-Seal Total, Restore-A-Drive, Resiblock, TIMCO)
- Stir or shake the sealer before use.
- Apply with a long-handled roller or a low-pressure sprayer for large areas.
- Work in sections with thin, even coats to avoid overlap marks.
- Let the first coat dry (follow the label, typically a few hours) before adding a second.
Premium finish (Kingfisher Ultimate Topcoat)
- Use on clean, bone-dry surfaces in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
- Apply thinly and evenly; avoid puddling.
- Follow the label for coverage, recoat and curing times.
Natural stone and masonry (Resiblock Indian Sandstone, Sika protectors)
- Test on a small, hidden area first to check the finish.
- Apply evenly with a brush, roller or sprayer, working from one edge to the other.
- Don’t over-apply – excess can leave a residue on dense stone.
Aftercare and Maintenance
- Curing time: Keep vehicles off for at least 24–48 hours, or as the label advises.
- Regular cleaning: Sweep regularly and deal with spills quickly. A periodic wash with Patio Wizard keeps the surface fresh.
- Spot treatments: Use Proformula Black Spot Remover if black spots return between sealing cycles.
- Resealing: Most paving and concrete needs resealing every 3–5 years.
Best Time of Year to Seal
In the UK, spring and summer are best, with early autumn fine if it’s mild and settled. Avoid winter (cold, damp, frost risk) and very hot days above around 28°C, which can make the sealer dry too fast.
The Cost Benefit
Resurfacing a driveway can cost thousands. Cleaning, repairing and sealing costs a fraction of that and can add years of life to the surface you already have.
